I Love You Beth Cooper

3 May

I Love You Beth Cooper:  I am fairly certain when I saw the preview for I Love You Beth Cooper I vowed never to see it. Ever. But it happened to be on TV when I was visiting my parents’ house for Easter weekend, and I was desperate, so I hung my head in shame and watched it. Thankfully, I only caught the last half of this film, but here is what I gathered.

During a highly unconventional Valedictorian speech, nerdy High School outcast, seen above, insults a majority of the student body before declaring his love for head cheerleader and high school dream girl Beth Cooper. Later that day she shows up at his door and what follows is a night of insanity and utter chaos involving rabid raccoons, roid-raging boyfriends, an awkward threesome, Spiderman underwear, and a cow stampede (not necessarily in that order).

While I probably wouldn’t suggest this movie to anyone else and I certainly wouldn’t take the time to watch the movie all the way through, there were some aspects of the film I appreciated. First, the main character had a huge nose and was really unattractive. Why did I appreciate this? Because often times movie nerds are actually played by fairly attractive actors. For example, Jake Gyllenhaal in October Sky,  Tobey McGuire in Spider-Man, Emile Hirsch in The Girl Next Door, Alyson Hannigan in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The list goes on and on but the point is, I doubt any of these actors know what it’s like to dwell in the miserable cesspool that is high school loserdom. This guy definitely knows. The second thing I liked is that the two main characters didn’t fall madly in love and live happily ever after aka Can’t Hardly Wait. It’s not that I dislike happy endings, it’s just that I’ve seen that happy ending one too many times. This slight divergence from the norm was refreshing even if the rest of the movie was terrible.
